Russia: Risks of direct nuclear confrontation with US keep growing
Russia has warned that risks of direct nuclear confrontation with the United States are constantly increasing as a result of Washington’s hostile attitude towards Moscow since the beginning of the Ukraine war.
Director of Russian Foreign Ministry’s Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Department Vladimir Yermakov raised the alarm in an interview with Russia’s TASS news agency on Tuesday, April 25.
“If the US continues to follow its current course towards a standoff with Russia, while constantly raising the stakes on the verge of a direct military conflict, then the fate of the New START Treaty may become sealed,” he said.
The New START was signed in April 2010 by then US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, under which both sides agreed to halve the number of strategic nuclear missiles and restrict the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads to 1,550, the lowest level in decades. The New START agreement was extended in February 2021 until February 4, 2026, by US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
On February 21, 2023, however, Russia suspended its participation in the New START amid Washington’s increasingly confrontational policies towards Moscow. It did not withdraw from the treaty, though, clarifying that it would continue to abide by the limits on the number of nuclear warheads that can be deployed under the New START.
“…in the worst-case scenario, i.e. if Washington drives the situation to a military clash between the strongest nuclear powers, then it is not the fate of the New START, but the fate of the entire world that will be a concern,” Yermakov said.
“This once again confirms that the most pressing threat today is connected not with the dynamic of stimuli for the first massive strike, which is supposed to be curbed by agreements like the New START, but with a danger of nuclear escalation as a result of a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers,” Yermakov explained, adding, “And, to our deepest regrets, these risks keep growing.”
The diplomat underscored that in order to improve the situation, “the US must immediately take concrete steps on de-escalation and abolish the hostile course towards undermining Russia’s security in practice.”
“There is simply no other way to reverse the negative trend,” Yermakov concluded.
He was apparently referring to the United States’ ongoing military assistance to Ukraine, which is engaged in a war with Russia.
Washington has announced 36 military aid packages for Kiev since the start of the conflict last February, which brings total US military assistance for Ukraine to more than $35 billion.
The Russian diplomat was also pointing to Washington encouraging eastward expansion of the US-led NATO military alliance towards Russia’s borders.
“This is exactly why we constantly point to the danger of US and NATO’s actions, who, it seems, have believed in the illusion of impunity and got carried away with such chimeras as ‘escalation control’ and ‘escalatory domination’,” the diplomat underscored. “We continue sending sobering signals to the West that a catastrophe must be prevented.”
However, Yermakov pointed out, the West “remains deaf to the calls,” and even “maliciously distorts them for propaganda purposes.”

Russia’s newest tanks enter battlefield in Ukraine
From Russia Today – Russian President Vladimir Putin said last year that Moscow would defend its territory _“by all available means.”
Russia’s most advanced T-14 Armata main battle tanks have been deployed to fight Ukrainian troops. The news comes as Kiev is planning a decisive push against Moscow’s forces. The Kremlin stated this month that Russia was closely monitoring information about Kiev’s offensive plans and capabilities.
According to the source, the T-14s were fitted with additional protection from anti-tank munitions. Tank crews have been training in one of Russia’s newly incorporated Donbass republics since 2022.
“We are approaching a crucial battle for the modern history of Ukraine,” said Kirill Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence.
Konstantin Sivkov, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences, said that the T-14 will be primarily pitted against the British Challenger 2 and German-made Leopard 2A6 models that were pledged to Kiev by NATO countries.
“The Armata surpasses both of these newest Western tanks in terms of technical characteristics,” he said.

The statement from Moscow’s UK embassy came after senior official James Heappey acknowledged that the British depleted uranium munitions had arrived on the battlefield.
It read, “James Heappey’s comments are a grim testament to the ruthlessness of the Anglo-Saxons’ policy of all-out escalation of the ‘proxy conflict’ they themselves unleashed in Ukraine.”
“He cynically stated that London is not monitoring the deployment of these weapons and has no obligation to eliminate the consequences of their use following the end of the conflict.”
The embassy went on to say that the British government could not escape accountability by passing them off to Ukrainian forces. It also stated that the government would be responsible for the effects of the “toxic ammunition”.
Last week, Andrey Kelin, Russia’s envoy to Britain, in an interview with RT claimed that DU munitions will be a “terrible thing… for the agriculture and for the people” of Ukraine. He added that the radioactive residue could contaminate Ukraine’s water and soil “for at least six generations.”

The British government has announced it will provide Ukraine with armour-piercing rounds containing depleted uranium – a byproduct of the uranium-enrichment process needed to create nuclear weapons. President Vladimir Putin warned Russia would “respond accordingly given that the collective West is starting to use weapons with a ‘nuclear component’”. The British “have lost their bearings”, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, warning the munitions are “a step toward accelerating escalation”. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said the announcement was “another step, and there aren’t so many of them left”.
Russia has repeatedly and explicitly made clear that if Depleted Uranium shells are fired at Russian troops, Russia will regard the use of the ammunition as being a “Dirty Bomb” attack against Russia, and will respond with radioactive weapons of its own.
